How To Help Your Kids Do Algebra

“Mom, I just can’t do Algebra.”

Of course you’d love to help. But ‘Algebra’?

It’s a bit outside of a parent’s Job Description isn’t it?

The good news is you CAN help.

And you don’t have to be mathematically minded, either.

All you need is some patience, a little creativity, and being able to see the world through your child’s eyes.

Imagine being led into an Egyptian temple, being shown a wall full of weird-looking hieroglyphics, and being asked to translate them.

That’s how Algebra feels to some kids.

Your mission is to help your kid understand why we’re using hieroglyphics. And then how to use them to solve simple problems.

Here’s how you do that:

*** PHASE 1: Get used to the language ***

Algebra uses abbreviations.

It’s therefore vital your child is comfortable using abbreviations in daily life.

Explain what abbreviations are and how they’re used.

For example, the name Frederick is abbreviated to Fred.

The United States is often abbreviated to the USA or even just the US.

And US states are also abbreviated. New York becomes NY, New Jersey becomes NJ.

Once the basic theory is understood, start introducing abbreviations around the home. There are many ways of doing this. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

~~ Throw a party ~~

Use abbreviations to build up a guest list of invitees.

Bill becomes B.

Marcy becomes M.

And if there’s a Jim and a John, use J1 and J2. Or Ji and Jo. Or use surnames to get JW and JS.

~~ Try some home cooking ~~

Teach your child how to make pancakes and give them the recipe as a formula:

2f + 2e + m + s

Where: f=flour, m=milk, s=sugar, e=eggs.

(Okay, I’m no chef, but you get the idea.)

~~ Design a ‘healthy eating’ schedule ~~

Yes, a little home algebra can even help your family eat more healthily.

Create abbreviations for oranges, apples, bananas, broccoli, celery, etc.

Then plan out your weekly schedule:

Mon: o + a + ba + 2br
Tue: 2ce + p + o + a
Wed: m + 2o
etc.

Once your schedule is drawn up, ask your kid to add up how many of each item you need to buy at the grocery store.

You’d never have guessed a shopping list could make such great algebra training, but it does.

When your child is comfortable with the basic language of Algebra, it’s time to move on to the next stage:

*** PHASE 2: Solve some problems ***

Much of Algebra involves finding an unknown value, also known as the “x factor”.

The best way to develop problem-solving skills in kids is by playing simple games and puzzles.

Here are two particularly useful games for developing the algebra mind.

~~ “Dollars & Dimes” ~~

The idea is to give your child a formula, and they tell you the amount of money.

So you say something like:

“2d plus n plus i”.

This means two dollars plus a nickel plus a dime.

(Notice how the letter ‘i’ has ingeniously been used to represent a dIme. This is because the letter ‘d’ has already been reserved for the Dollar.)

The answer should be “Two dollars and fifteen cents.”

Play this a few times using several combinations of notes and coins.

You can also tell your child an amount of money, and ask them to give you the formula.

So if you say, “Four dollars and five cents”,your child replies: “4d plus 5c”.

Ideally they should give you the answer using the least amount of coins possible. So for “fifteen cents”, they should say “n + i” or “i + n”. Not “15c”!

~~ “Think of a Number” ~~

This is a classic you can play anywhere. Try it on long car journeys.

The objective is to guess the mystery number.

You say: “I’ve thought of a number, added 3 to it, and the result is 7. What is my number?”

Make the questions as easy as possible to start with. As your child gains confidence, make the questions are little harder.

At some point, say you’re going to call the mystery number ‘x’. Then ask the question in equation form.

Now don’t panic. It’s simple.

Suppose your question is: “What number plus 3 makes 17?”

You call the mystery number ‘x’. And so your equation is:

x + 3 = 17

You ask your child “if x plus three is seventeen, what’s x?”

You can also reverse roles and ask them to give you some puzzles. Most kids enjoy this. And it trains them to think more creatively about algebra too.

*** Summary ***

Just a few subtle changes in the way your child thinks can have profound effects on their results in the math class.

Don’t overload your child. Go in very small steps with lots of similar examples to give practice and confidence.

Even the smallest thing may be a stumbling block. Like understanding that ‘x’ means ‘1x’ (the ‘1′ is not usually written down).

Give lots of praise and reward to create and reinforce the ‘feel good’ factor.

As in any kind of teaching, it’s better to ask lots of questions rather than keep telling someone something.

Take enough little leaps and at some point your kid will experience the “Aha!” moment when the whole algebra thing suddenly clicks into place.

Mistletoe and Santa Claus

One of Santa’s favorite traditions around Christmas time—and surely a favorite tradition of men everywhere during Christmas —is that of mistletoe. When a man catches his wife or special someone under the mistletoe, he gets to plant a kiss on her. Of course, with all other Christmas traditions, this wonderful habit is almost as old as the snow that falls around Christmas time.

It actually all started with an ancient myth from the Nordic people of Scandinavia and Northern Europe. Hundreds of years ago, the goddess Frigga had a son named Balder who was killed by an arrow made of mistletoe. Frigga was so sad that her son died, that she cried and cried, but instead of tears, white berries poured down her cheeks. These were no ordinary white berries, and they actually worked to bring Balder back to life by stripping the poison from the mistletoe. That made Frigga so happy that she blessed all mistletoe, and anyone walking underneath it was given a free kiss.

Of course, the Nordic folks were not the only ancient people who used and believed in the magical powers of mistletoe. The ancient Druids of the United Kingdom were big fans of the evergreen plant, and would distribute it to all the people in their villages. They would hang the plant over the front door of their homes, because they believed that the plant would protect them from evil spirits, goblins, and even thunder and lightening. Druids also believed that mistletoe stood for peace, so if Druid warriors ever met underneath a patch of mistletoe in the forest, they could not fight. They would call a truce and meet somewhere else to fight.

Put all of these traditions and beliefs together—and then mix in the traditions of Christmas and Santa Claus—and you have what would become today’s modern tradition surrounding mistletoe and kisses.

It was not that simple for guys and gals and the magical mistletoe in the 1700s. Back then, kissing was a very serious thing to do with a girl. There was no spin the bottle or truth or dare. If you kissed a girl under the mistletoe, you meant business. Basically, a kiss under the mistletoe meant you were prepared to marry her. On the flip side, if a girl stood under mistletoe at Christmas time and no man kissed her, that meant she would stay unmarried for the entire next year. But the lucky man who would be brave and kiss her could expect a lasting friendship, a deep romance, and happiness with the lucky woman.

We cannot know for sure if this is how good old Saint Nick got proposed to Mrs. Claus, but we can be sure that the jolly old man hangs a piece of mistletoe in his home in the North Pole. Come to think of it, he probably also hangs a bunch of mistletoe in the reindeer barn, the toy factory, and anywhere else Mrs. Claus might find herself!

Thomas Easterday is the Director of Marketing for Letter By Santa. Letter by Santa offers memorable letters from Santa Claus that help keep the Christmas spirit alive. For more information about Letter by Santa and to purchase letters from Santa please visit http://www.letterbysanta.com/ .

Traveling With Your Toy Breed Dog

Traveling With Your Toy Breed Dog

Have you wanted to visit friends or relatives, or perhaps hike the trails at a scenic park? Did concerns over leaving your pet behind prevent you from going? Traveling with your pet is easier than you think.

Air travel with pets falls into two categories, in-cabin and cargo. In-cabin pets must be small enough to fit into a carrier that will slide under the seat in front of you. Pets too large to fit comfortably in a carrier must travel in cargo. If your pet needs to travel in the cargo area of the plane, you will need to check for temperature restrictions. Most cargo areas are not temperature controlled. They do not have air conditioning or heat.

When you make your plane reservations ask if the airline will accommodate your pet. Some airlines do not take pets. If you purchase your airline tickets through the Internet, make sure your pet will be able to travel with you. You will need a reservation for your pet as well as yourself. You will need to inquire of the airline’s specific requirements such as plastic crate or soft-sided carrier. Ask the airlines what size will be required for your specific pet.

Airlines have restrictions on the number of pets they will carry in order to provide safe travel for all. Therefore, making your pet’s reservation at the same time you purchase your ticket is a good idea. Extra charges for both in-cabin and cargo pets will be assessed.

You will need a health certificate from your veterinarian. Health certificates are good for ten days. If your trip will be longer than that you will need to purchase another health certificate for the return trip. Cost of a health certificate varies by location and vets. Cost can be anywhere between $15 and $45.

Most airlines require a soft-sided carrier for in-cabin pet traveling. Some soft-sided carriers come with wheels just like luggage, which makes it easier to transport your pet through the airport. A soft-sided carrier also reduces the amount of “pet space” under the airplane seat. Window and middle seats have more room underneath than aisle seats due to seat configurations.

Toy breed dogs traveling in cargo will need an airline-approved crate. Generally, these are hard-sided, non-collapsible crates. The airlines usually require the toy breed dog be able to stand and turn around comfortably in the crate. Some airlines will not allow toys to be inside the crate. You may have to pack your toy breed dog’s toys separately with your own luggage. Be sure to ask about the airline’s requirement of toys inside the crate when you make your reservations. If the airline does allow toys, it is nice to supply your toy breed dog with at least one companion toy for the trip. The crate will also need to have one water dish and one food dish attached to the front of the door. Most airlines will require you to place a bag of food on top of the crate and some inside the food dish. You will also need to provide soft, absorbent material for the bottom of the crate. A soft blanket with your scent works well.

Be sure to provide your toy breed pet Nutri-cal before the flight and as soon as you able to reunite with your pet regardless of whether or not they ride in the cabin with you or in the cargo area. The Nutri-cal will help keep their blood sugars level. Toy breed dogs are more susceptible to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar attacks), which sometimes occur during the stress of traveling. Do not give your toy breed dog tranquilizers.

The motion of the airplane has a soporific effect, which may cause your pet (and people) to drift off into a sleep. Once in the air your toy breed pet will probably sleep most of the trip.

You will probably want to train your toy breed pet before the trip to make your pet a better traveler. There are many resources available that will show you how to accomplish this. One way to help your pet get use to traveling inside a hard-sided crate or a soft-sided carrier is to pack the crate or carrier just as you would for the airplane trip. Take your pet for several trips in the car before you actually go on the airplane trip. Take your toy breed pet to the vet in the same carrier or crate you will be using for the airlines. A soft blanket with your scent is nice to place in the bottom of the crate for your toy breed pet’s comfort. Time spent training will definitely pay off for you and your toy breed pet.

Don’t hesitate to travel by air with your toy breed pet. A little preparation and planning before the trip is all that is usually required. Flying with your toy breed pet is safer than traveling in an automobile. Don’t forget to check with your motel to see if pets are welcome!

Some online MBAs do offer brief in-classroom periods where the students need to travel to a school’s physical campus for a short period.Resources and support It’s especially important to have a large online library to conduct research for papers. The best programs will go beyond that and even have an online service to help students with their writing. To find out if such resources exist, call institutions to ask about the faculty’s credentials, as well as the students. The qualities of both sets of people will help determine how much you’re getting for your money. CostJust how much money you’ll pay for an online MBA program can vary broadly, it may cost $5,000 to $10,000 for unaccredited programs to $45,000 for Kelley MBA. Bottle Feeding: Is Baby Getting Too Much?

Recent studies have linked adult obesity with being over fed bottle milk in infancy. So, are you giving too much milk to your baby?

If you’re bottle feeding your baby it’s easy to see how much baby is getting. Manufacturers provide instructions on how to make formula milk and how much milk a baby should consume. The guidelines state how much to feed a baby for a particular age and weight. So, why do babies run a greater risk of being overweight when they are bottle fed?

The biggest reason for excessive weight gain is because parents ignore a baby’s signals that she’s had enough. Breastfeeding mothers are taught to follow baby’s lead. Breastfeeding mothers are taught to offer breast milk when the baby wants it and to stop breastfeeding when she sees signs that baby has had enough. Mothers who choose to bottle feed are seldom, if ever, given this advice. Rather, mothers feel obliged to follow instructions printed on the side of a container. But guidelines aren’t suitable for every child; each child is unique, different. Because of blind acceptance that manufacturers of formula milk know best, many mothers are tempted to make baby finish the bottle.

Nicolas Stettler, a pediatric nutrition specialist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, studied data on a large group of bottle-fed babies. He found a correlation between rapid weight gain in the first four months and being overweight at age seven. This, he suggests, may be due to overfeeding. “With bottle-fed babies, a mother can override her baby by urging him to finish the bottle,” he explains. “The mother needs to be responsive to her baby’s cues.” When babies are constantly overfilled, past the point of feeling replete, then in time they may learn to ignore the ‘full signal’. Also, for most babies, drinking milk isn’t just about getting nutrition; it’s about comfort. Therefore some babies will often feed even when they’re not hungry.

A mother must be on the lookout for signals that baby has been fed enough. But what signals should a bottle-feeding mother be looking for? Firstly, follow the advice given to breastfeeding mothers. That means letting your baby take ten or 12 sucks, then removing the bottle, then allowing ten or 12 more sucks, then another break, and so on. This pacing is particularly important for a newborn, less so after about four months. During these breaks, remove the nipple from your baby’s mouth as you might accidentally press it against her palate. If, after one of these breaks, your baby does not open her mouth for the bottle, she’s probably finished. When you baby is drinking watch her mouth. If your baby’s mouth relaxes or goes slack so that she’s no longer sucking actively, she is finished drinking. If you baby is no longer keeping eye contact, rolling her head from side to side, or is trying to push the bottle way; she’s finished drinking.

Formula-fed babies are known to put on weight in a different pattern compared to breastfed babies. This difference is most marked after two or three months, when formula-fed babies gain weight slightly faster than breastfed babies on average. Breastfeed babies typically gain weight more slowly after the first three months. Also, they tend to be slightly leaner at a year old than formula-fed babies. Bear this in mind if you are comparing your baby’s weight gains against a weight chart.

Baby’s weight gains can be erratic and it’s not unusual for new born babies to loose weight in the first few days. If you are concerned about your baby’s weight you should immediately get medical advice. As discussed above, the most important thing is to follow your baby’s lead as to how much it needs; not anyone else’s.

Robin O’Brien is founder of Baby Bottle Feeding. It offers advice on choosing the right infant formula and any other bottle feeding problems.

Is The Eureka Optima Vacuum Cleaner The Best Upright On The Market?

Posted on January 9th, 2007. About Family.

Software Scripts Resources

Get the right scripts for business

Many people prefer upright vacuum cleaners because of their power and compact storage. However, the biggest disadvantage with an upright vacuum cleaner is its weight. Eureka think they have solved the problem, but have they?

There’s no denying that the Eureka Optima comes with some impressive features. First off is its weight. Weighing in at only 11 lbs (4.98 Kg) the appliance is much lighter than just about all other vacuum brands. It comes with a washable, pleated filter. The tools that come with the appliance are a crevice tool and dusting brush. The extras include: On/Off Brushroll, Ergonomical Handle, Telescoping Handle, Suction Control Knob for Tools, Bagless and Stair Cleaning Handle. And the Optima comes with a 1 year warranty. The Eureka Optima’s handle is looped and is adjustable for eight different heights. The unique loop design of the handle combined with the lightweight construction really does make handling the vacuum child’s play. Its price is also a real positive feature of the vacuum; it’s much cheaper than its competitors. You don’t have to compromise in price when you want a superior vacuum.

But does the Eureka Optima lightweight construct compromise its cleaning power? Absolutely not. The suction power is very impressive and does a fantastic job on cleaning all floor surfaces. Switching from carpet to hardwood or vinyl floors is easy; simply by using the on/off brushroll - the bottom of the cleaner has a line of rubber behind the brush roll that keeps dirt from being blown around on hard surface floors. The Eureka Optima doesn’t easily tip over. With the handle down, the Optima can be pulled around behind you without tipping over. Even when using the tools, it won’t tip over, thanks to the hose attachment being low on the body of the vacuum. Being able to lower the handle makes the machine very compact and easy to store. Finally, and something worth noting, is its noise level. The Eureka Optima is one of the quietest vacuum cleaners on the market.

But, does the Eureka Optima have any shortcomings? Well, perhaps. The Eureka Optima is a bagless vacuum. Whilst this does help in saving some weight, emptying the canister - as with other bagless vacuum cleaner brands - can be a messy business. The Optima doesn’t ship with a HEPA filter. This might be a problem for those whose are allergenic to house dust. However, you can order a replacement HEPA filter for the vacuum. Perhaps Eureka should have made the HEPA filter a standard feature of the Optima? Also, cleaning the pleated filter can be a real chore; some customers have reported that cleaning the filter frequently is a must if you want to maintain the suction power.

In conclusion, does the Eureka Optima vacuum cleaner live up to the hype? All vacuum cleaners have their good and bad points. But if you want a lightweight but powerful vacuum cleaner, and you like upright vacuums, then the Eureka Optima is probably the vacuum for you.

Robin O’Brien is founder of a website that provides vacuum cleaner reviews of the top brands on the market today; including Hoover, Kirby and Eureka vacuum cleaners amongst others.
